But it often happens quicker than you think. A technical defect, an accident or even difficult weather conditions such as rain or snow can mean that the vehicle can no longer be moved under its own power.

What to do if your car breaks down?
If the vehicle comes to a standstill completely unexpectedly, many people don't know what to do next. It is usually not enough to simply dial a service number on your cell phone and wait in the car for roadside assistance. There are a few things that should be done in advance:
- Keep calm and try - switch on hazard warning lights, depending on whether this is still possible with a defective tire or engine - to park your car either on the hard shoulder or in a breakdown bay so as not to obstruct the traffic behind.
- If your car breaks down on the highway, it is particularly important that all passengers put on high-visibility vests before leaving the car. If possible, always get out on the right-hand side of the road to avoid being hit by passing cars.
- Set up a warning triangle to warn other road users and let them know that your car has broken down. On country roads, the distance to your vehicle should be about 100 meters, on the freeway even 150 meters.
- After you have brought the vehicle occupants and yourself to safety behind the crash barrier, you can call for help. As a rule, you should not attempt to repair the breakdown yourself, as you could quickly be hit by vehicles speeding past.
Important:
A car breakdown usually happens unpredictably. Therefore, always make sure you are prepared for an emergency. Depending on the situation, high-visibility vests for everyone in the vehicle, a jumper cable, a first aid kit, a tow rope and possibly a flashlight can turn out to be real lifesavers. It is mandatory to carry a first aid kit and enough high-visibility vests for all passengers anyway.
