Third-party liability, partially comprehensive, fully comprehensive?
Third-party liability
Third-party liability is mandatory for vehicle owners and covers damage caused to others by the operation of your vehicle. The
Third-party liability insurance covers personal injury, property damage and pure financial loss.
These are the minimum requirements for liability insurance to cover damage caused to the other party in an accident. In addition, there are other insurance policies that cover damage to your own vehicle.
Partial casco
Partial casco covers damage to your own vehicle for which no one can be held liable. It is a voluntary insurance that can be taken out in addition to motor vehicle liability insurance.
Partially comprehensive insurance covers things such as damage to the parked car or theft.
Fully comprehensive cover
For complete protection, you need fully comprehensive insurance. It also covers all elementary damage to the car such as theft or storms. In contrast to comprehensive insurance, however, fully comprehensive insurance also covers damage that you have caused yourself.
Traffic legal protection insurance
Traffic legal protection insurance protects you against the financial consequences of a legal dispute involving your private car and as a road user.
Passenger insurance
Filling gaps in benefits:
Liability investigations require a certain amount of time, during which the injured parties have to wait for their money. Furthermore, a benefit from liability insurance may be reduced, for example due to the fault situation. Motor vehicle accident insurance (MFU), on the other hand, pays out immediately without the need to clarify questions of fault first. Passenger insurance can also be used to fill gaps that arise from the benefits of other accident insurances. If, for example, a non-working person becomes temporarily unable to work or disabled as a result of an accident, they generally receive no cash benefits from the health insurer or only a small pension from the disability insurance. It should also be noted that many MFU benefits (in contrast to social insurance) are generally paid out in addition to all other insurance, such as lump-sum death and disability benefits or daily allowances. MFU plays a special role if the vehicle is used to transport people who have no or insufficient insurance cover; this may be the case for visitors from abroad or hitchhikers. Passenger insurance generally provides - at advantageous premiums - lump-sum death and disability benefits, daily allowances and unlimited medical expenses with free choice of doctor as well as hospitalization in a private ward.
Insurers and offers
Insurance companies are basically free to design their insurance products for motor vehicles - subject, of course, to the regulatory requirements and provisions of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (Finma). For this reason, there are also various offers from insurance companies on the market for motor vehicle insurance, with different insured risks, benefits and premium models. As a rule, the premium calculation for comprehensive insurance for passenger cars is based on the new value (incl. 10% of accessories) of the insured vehicle at the time of manufacture. The continuously decreasing value of the vehicle is already taken into account as an average value in this premium calculation model. One advantage of this premium calculation, which has been the standard and proven method for many years, is that the contract and the premiums do not have to be adjusted to the actual value of the vehicle every year. It also avoids any overinsurance or underinsurance associated with the vehicle value. Some companies grant an age discount on comprehensive insurance for used vehicles.
